Gloria Swanson

Film: actress, producer, United States

Gloria Swanson was one of the grandest legends of early Hollywood, renowned as both a lavish fashion trendsetter and a pioneering independent producer. She first achieved major screen stardom under Cecil B. DeMille in lavish silent dramas such as Male and Female and Why Change Your Wife?. During the late 1920s, she boldly established her own production company, earning Academy Award nominations for Sadie Thompson and The Trespasser. Swanson staged one of cinema's most celebrated comebacks in 1950, delivering an indelible, Golden Globe-winning performance as faded silent star Norma Desmond in Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard. She remained an energetic cultural figure across television and stage until her passing in New York City in 1983.
