Mary Pickford
Film: actress, producer, Canada
Mary Pickford, affectionately known as America's Sweetheart, was silent cinema's first global female superstar and an astute film mogul. Starting under D. W. Griffith at Biograph in 1909, she commanded unprecedented creative autonomy, producing her own pictures and co-founding United Artists in 1919. Her portrayals of spirited young heroines in films like The Poor Little Rich Girl and Pollyanna captured international audiences. In 1929, she transitioned to talkies and won the second Academy Award for Best Actress for Coquette. Pickford retired from the screen in 1933 to focus on production. She died in Santa Monica, California, in May 1979.
