Clara Bow
Film: actress, United States
Clara Bow was the defining screen presence of the Roaring Twenties, immortalised as the original 'It Girl'. Born in Brooklyn, she won a beauty contest that launched her career into silent cinema, quickly emerging as Hollywood's premier box-office attraction. With her expressive saucer eyes and dynamic vivacity, she came to personify the independent spirit of the modern flapper era in films such as Mantrap, It, and the Academy Award-winning aviation epic Wings. Although she transitioned into sound pictures with The Wild Party, intense media scrutiny and personal health struggles prompted her early departure from screen acting in 1933. She spent her later years out of the spotlight and died in Los Angeles in 1965.
