Dorothy Dandridge
Film: actress, singer, dancer, United States
Dorothy Dandridge was a luminous actress and cabaret singer whose talent and beauty broke barriers in American entertainment. Beginning as a child performer and vocalist with the Dandridge Sisters, she established herself in elite nightclubs before earning film roles. In 1954, she made history as the first African American woman nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her magnetic portrayal of Carmen Jones. Despite exceptional artistry, her career was severely constrained by systemic prejudice and limited opportunities in Hollywood. She died tragically in Hollywood in 1965 from an accidental drug intoxication at the age of only 42, leaving behind an influential legacy.
