Duane Allman

Music: guitarist, songwriter, United States

Duane Allman was an American guitarist whose expressive slide technique and fiery melodic improvisation made him one of the most influential musicians in rock and blues history. Co-founding The Allman Brothers Band with his brother Gregg in 1969, he became the architect of Southern rock, celebrated for dual-lead interplay and marathon live jams captured on the landmark 1971 recording At Fillmore East. Allman was also an invaluable session player for soul greats at FAME Studios and contributed defining guitar parts to Derek and the Dominos' classic album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. His extraordinary career was cut short by a motorcycle accident in Macon, Georgia, in 1971 at age twenty-four.
