Jayne Mansfield
Film: actress, singer, comedian, United States
Jayne Mansfield was an American actress and singer who became one of the definitive mid-century Hollywood sex symbols and comic performers. After Broadway success satirising her own image in Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?, she signed with 20th Century Fox. Mansfield earned international fame in Frank Tashlin's musical satire The Girl Can't Help It and reprised her stage role in the film adaptation of Rock Hunter, winning a Golden Globe for New Star of the Year. Though often cast to parody bombshell tropes, she possessed genuine comic timing and a shrewd understanding of publicity. Her life was tragically cut short by a car crash near Slidell, Louisiana, in 1967.
