Montgomery Clift
Film: actor, United States
Montgomery Clift was an American actor who pioneered a sensitive, introspective style of naturalistic screen acting in mid-century American cinema. Having already achieved success on Broadway as a youth, his film debut in Red River followed by The Search established him immediately as a major star and a four-time Academy Award nominee. Clift's haunting, tender performances in landmarks such as A Place in the Sun and From Here to Eternity revolutionised dramatic masculinity on screen alongside contemporaries Marlon Brando and James Dean. Despite debilitating injuries from a 1956 car crash, he continued to produce arresting work in The Misfits and Judgment at Nuremberg. Clift died in New York City in July 1966 at forty-five.
