Rita Hayworth
Film: actress, dancer, United States
Rita Hayworth was an American actress and dancer who became one of Columbia Pictures' greatest stars and a defining pin-up icon of the 1940s. Born Margarita Cansino in New York City into a family of Spanish dancers, she displayed exceptional choreography in musicals opposite Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, including Cover Girl. She achieved definitive stardom as the seductive title character in Charles Vidor's noir classic Gilda in 1946, followed by Orson Welles's The Lady from Shanghai. Hayworth transitioned effectively into mature dramatic roles in the 1950s before illness curtailed her career in 1972. She died of Alzheimer's disease in New York in May 1987 at sixty-eight.
