Louise Brooks
Film: actress, dancer, United States
Louise Brooks was an iconic American dancer and actress whose sleek bobbed haircut and naturalistic performance style came to epitomise the Jazz Age. After beginnings as a stage dancer with Denishawn and the Ziegfeld Follies, she entered American silent cinema during the mid-1920s. Her lasting artistic triumph arrived when she travelled to Weimar Germany to collaborate with director G. W. Pabst, starring as Lulu in Pandora's Box and Thymian in Diary of a Lost Girl. Disillusioned with studio commercialism, she retired from acting in the late 1930s. Rediscovered by French film historians decades later, she gained acclaim as an insightful essayist and film memoirist before her death in Rochester, New York, in 1985.
